Canadian Solar is adding to its already-impressive portfolio by breaking ground on a project in the United States.
The company, one of the world’s leading solar energy providers, has started construction on a 2.5-megawatt photovoltaic solar installation in North Carolina.
Canadian Solar will handle delivery of the Laurinburg Solar Farm project, partnering with Mortenson Construction, which will take care of installation, engineering and design.
All told, the site will generate roughly 3,483 megawatt/hours of clean solar energy per year. That will allow it to power 300 homes from its 10-acre site.
“The Laurinburg Solar Farm marks an important milestone for Canadian Solar in the United States,” said Canadian Solar director of commercial and utility-scale markets Noah Eckert. “Canadian Solar’s goal is to support our customers and partners to bring utility-scale projects to completion. In that vein, we selected Mortenson Construction, a well-regarded and experienced construction firm focused on delivering the highest quality service, to design and build the project.”
The project continues Canadian Solar’s ongoing work in supplying the U.S. market will clean energy products. While many solar power companies have struggled of late, Canadian Solar’s penetration into the U.S. market has allowed it to continue to grow.
Canadian Solar has also made headway into other global markets. While its main headquarters is in West Guelph, Ontario, the company has offices in the U.S., Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, China, Japan and elsewhere around the world.
The company has placed more of an emphasis on project solutions, with that area expected to make up 25 per cent of Canadian Solar’s total revenue in 2012. That more than doubles the 10 per cent of the company’s total revenue attributed to project solutions in 2011.
Canadian Solar’s reputation has helped it garner success.
“It’s great to partner with a globally respected company like Canadian Solar because we know we will be working with top quality products,” said Mortenson Renewable Energy Groups general manager and vice president Mark Donahue. “It’s fulfilling to be working in Laurinburg once again, and we’re excited to help North Carolina continue its progression towards becoming a solar power leader in the Southeast.”
Work on the Laurinburg Solar Farm is expected to be completed in December of this year.
